What Are Britannia Coins?
The Britannia is one of the UK's best-known investment coins, named after the female personification of the British Isles, a symbol of Britain's maritime heritage and strength. Investors favour these coins for their low premiums and their Capital Gains Tax-exempt status as UK legal tender.
The gold Britannia was first introduced in 1987 as the UK's first official one-ounce gold bullion coin. Britannias were initially struck in 22-carat gold, but since 2013, they have been produced in 24-carat (999.9 fine) gold in line with other world bullion coins. Gold Britannias are most often seen as one-ounce coins, but The Royal Mint also issues 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz denominations, alongside special proof versions for collectors.
The silver Britannia was launched in 1997, and is now produced in 999 fine silver. Like the gold version, silver Britannias are available as a 1oz bullion coin as well as in proof finishes for collectors.
Both gold and silver Britannias depict the reigning monarch on the obverse: originally Queen Elizabeth II, now King Charles III. The most common reverse design shows Britannia holding a shield and trident, but various variant designs have also been used over the years.

British one-ounce gold Britannias feature this classic reverse design, paired with a portrait of the current monarch on the obverse.
What Are 1oz Gold Britannias Worth?
The value of a 1oz Gold Britannia is primarily tied to the current gold price, as each contains 31.1 grams (one troy ounce) of fine gold. Their market value rises and falls in line with the daily bullion price. You can check the up-to-date value of your gold Britannias using our scrap gold calculator, which reflects the live price we are currently paying for gold.
While the majority of gold Britannias trade close to their bullion value, some coins carry an additional collectable premium. Early issues, such as the first-year 1987 gold Britannia, and certain limited-edition proof coins or low-mintage releases, are often sought after by collectors and can attract higher prices.
If you have silver Britannias, their value will generally follow the spot price of silver, though special proof editions may also carry modest collectable premiums.
