What Are Gold Krugerrands?

The Krugerrand was introduced by the South African Mint in 1967 as the world's first modern bullion coin. It was designed to give private investors an easy way to buy and trade gold.

A standard 1oz Krugerrand contains 31.1 grams (one troy ounce) of fine gold, alloyed with a small amount of copper to make it more durable, which gives the coin its distinctive red-gold colour. In addition to the popular one-ounce coin, Krugerrands have also been issued in 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz sizes, with proof editions and sets produced for collectors.

Krugerrands have a standardised design, making them instantly identifiable to investors. The obverse bears a portrait of Paul Kruger, former President of the South African Republic, while the reverse shows the springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This timeless design and the coin's international recognition have made the Krugerrand a favourite with gold buyers around the globe.

Is It Illegal To Own Krugerrands? No, Krugerrands are perfectly legal to own and trade today. However, in the 1980s, during the era of apartheid in South Africa, many countries banned the import of Krugerrands. These economic sanctions were lifted after 1994.

How To Identify Fake Krugerrands

With the steady rise in gold prices, counterfeit Krugerrands have become increasingly common and convincing. We regularly encounter fakes that closely replicate the design, colour and dimensions of genuine South African coins.

Many modern counterfeits utilise a tungsten core, a metal with a density very similar to that of gold, and are covered with a thick layer of gold plating. This means the coin can appear to have the correct weight and size, making it harder to detect at first glance.

A quick at-home check that can sometimes reveal a fake is the 'ring test':

  1. Balance the coin gently on the tip of your finger
  2. Tap it lightly with another metal object - ideally another gold coin
  3. Listen to the sound: a genuine Krugerrand produces a clear, high-pitched ring, whereas a counterfeit will usually sound dull or thud-like

Check With An Expert: The ring test is only a preliminary check. Some sophisticated fakes can still pass this test, so it's always best to have your coin inspected by a professional dealer with the right equipment.

What Are 1oz Gold Krugerrands Worth?

The value of a 1oz Krugerrand is primarily determined by the current gold price, as each coin contains one full troy ounce of fine gold. The market price of Krugerrands closely tracks the global spot price of gold, making it one of the most liquid and transparent bullion investments.

While most Krugerrands trade at or near their intrinsic gold value, some older or limited-edition proof Krugerrands, as well as coins in exceptional condition, can carry a modest collectable premium. This includes the highly sought-after 1967 Krugerrand, from the first year that these coins were issued. When you sell to MJ Hughes Coins, we always assess both the precious metal content and any collector interest to ensure you receive a fair and competitive offer.
