What Is A Gold Sovereign?

Often referred to as the 'chief coin of the world,' the Gold Sovereign is one of Britain's most iconic coins. Struck in 22-carat gold and with a nominal face value of just £1, a Sovereign's real worth lies in its gold content and its historic significance.

The first hammered Sovereigns appeared in the Tudor era, beginning under King Henry VII in 1489. The name was revived more than three centuries later during the Great Recoinage of 1817, when a new milled Sovereign was introduced to replace the gold Guinea. These coins are still minted today with The Royal Mint offering proof Sovereigns and sets for collectors, alongside bullion editions, designed for investors.

Sovereigns feature a portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse, paired either with an elegant shield design or an iconic image of England's patron saint. Benedetto Pistrucci's depiction of the legend of St George and the dragon is one of the most famous numismatic designs and is recognised by collectors worldwide.

The 1937 George VI gold proof Sovereign is one of the most sought-after coins in the Sovereign series.

What Is A Sovereign Worth?

For most Sovereigns, the value is closely linked to the current gold price, as each coin contains 0.2354 troy ounces of pure gold. Their market value therefore rises and falls in line with the metal market.

Some Sovereigns, however, command far more than their gold value due to their rarity or historical importance. Examples include the 1819 George III Sovereign, the 1920-S George V Sydney Sovereign, and the 1936 Edward VIII proof Sovereign. We take pride in sharing our expertise and will always pay a premium for scarce and collectable Sovereigns.

Beware Fakes: Counterfeit Sovereigns have been produced for as long as genuine ones have existed. Some are very convincing and may even be made from real gold. Our team at MJ Hughes Coins are experts at detecting fake Sovereigns, giving you the confidence that your coins will be properly identified and valued.
