The first hammered Sovereigns appeared in the Tudor era, beginning under King Henry VII in 1489. The name was revived more than three centuries later during the Great Recoinage of 1817, when a new milled Sovereign was introduced to replace the gold Guinea. Sovereigns feature a portrait of the reigning monarch on the obverse, paired either with an elegant shield design or an iconic image of England's patron saint.
