The world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway opened in 1863 and is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines of the London Underground (or "Tube").
This coin is to celebrate the London Underground 150th Anniversary. It is one of two coins celebrating the Underground in 2013.
It shows the front of a tube train (1967 stock) fills the cupro-nickel centre of the coin as if approaching out of a tunnel formed by the surrounding nickel-brass outer ring of the coin.
Inscription "1863 · LONDON UNDERGROUND · 2013" above.
The edge is milled and is a linear representation of Harry Beck’s iconic Tube map.
The reverse was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby; the pair also designed the London 2012 Olympic Torch.
The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
