2010 Two Pound Coin - Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale(1820-1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and thought of as the founder of modern nursing. Her work of managing the nurses in the Crimean War is well noted and she was referred to as "The Lady with the Lamp".

This coin recognises the 100th Anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale and the 150th anniversary of the publication of her Notes on Nursing (celebrated in 2009).

The design portrays a pulse being taken, whilst the background symbolises the rays of light from the lamp that Florence Nightingale was known for carrying during her rounds attending to the wounded troops in the Crimean War. Surrounded by the inscription "1820 – FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE – 1910" with "TWO POUNDS" below

The edge is milled and has the insciption "150 YEARS OF NURSING"

The reverse was designed by the Royal Mint’s Design Team Leader and Engraver, Gordon Summers.

The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Florence Nightingale's image appeared on the reverse of £10 Series D banknotes issued by the Bank of England from 1975 until 1994. As well as a standing portrait, she was depicted on the notes holding her lamp in a field hospital.
