2009 Two Pound Coin - Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) is universally known for his work on evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and had compelling evidence in his book On the Origin of the Species published in 1859.

This coin celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth as as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.

The reverse was designed by Suzie Zamit. A profile portrait of Charles Darwin on left, facing right, stares into the face of a chimpanzee on right, facing left. The inscription "1809 . DARWIN . 2009" above, "TWO POUNDS" below

The edge is milled and has the inscription "ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859"  

The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
