To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, a new design was created for the 2002 sovereign series.
The reverse depicts The Shield of Arms of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland within an open wreath of laurel, ensigned by Our Royal Crown.

Queen Elizabeth II's fourth portrait can be seen on the obverse of the coin, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The coin is made of solid 22 carat gold (Gold fineness of 0.916).
It was issued in an original Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsule. The coin was presented in a Royal Mint green velvet case, accompanied with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity (COA).

The gold five pounds piece has a weight of 39.94 grams.
Only 1,370 BU gold five pounds pieces were issued by the Royal Mint in 2002.
