The 2001 Gold 4-Coin Sovereign Proof Set consists of:
- 2001 Gold Five-Pound (Quintuple Sovereign)
- 2001 Gold Double Sovereign (Marconi Gold Two-Pound)
- 2001 Gold Sovereign
- 2001 Gold Half-Sovereign
The set includes a gold plated medallion showing a crowned 'Elizabeth R' with the date '2001'. The reverse depicts a Snake, the Chinese new year animal for 2001.
Benedetto Pistrucci's famous portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on each of the reverses.
The 2001 two pounds piece commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Marconi. Designed by Robert Evans, the reverse depicts decorative radio waves emanating from a spark of electricity, linking the zeros of the date to represent the generation of the signal that crossed the Atlantic, with the date '2001' and denomination 'TWO POUNDS'. The edge inscription reads WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC MARCONI 1901'.
Queen Elizabeth II's fourth portrait can be seen on the obverse of all four coins, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley
The four coins are all made of solid 22 carat gold (Gold fineness of 0.916), and are housed in their original Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsules. The coins are presented in their Royal Mint green leatherette presentation case, accompanied with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.
Only 1,000 sets were issued by the Royal Mint in 2001.
