1979 finally saw the issue of Elizabeth II Proof Sovereigns. Prior to this proofs had been extremely rare. This sovereign has the Arnold Machin Obverse.
Benedetto Pistrucci's famous portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on the reverse of the coin. Queen Elizabeth II's second portrait can be seen on the obverse, designed by Arnold Machin.

The sovereign is made of solid 22 carat gold (Gold Fineness of 0.916), and weighs 7.98 grams. It has a diameter of 22.05mm.
The coin was originally housed in a Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsule, presented in its Royal Mint blue leatherette foam case.
A certificate of authenticity (COA) was NOT issued with the 1979 proof sovereign.
