About George VI Sovereigns

King George VI ascended to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. He was crowned king in 1937, and reigned until his death in 1952.

It is no understatement that King George VI never wanted to become King. He suffered from a terrible stammer, making public speeches was incredibly frustrating for him.

Only one sovereign was produced by the Royal Mint baring his portrait. It was a proof example, only issued as part of a 4 coin gold proof sovereign set. No sovereigns were ever minted for circulation purposes.
