To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, a new design was created for the 2002 sovereign series.
The 2002 sovereign depicts The Shield of Arms of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland within an open wreath of laurel, ensigned by Our Royal Crown, on the reverse of the coin (Designed by Timothy Noad).
Queen Elizabeth II’s fourth portrait can be seen on the obverse of the coin, desIgned by Ian Rank Broadley.

The 2002 sovereign would make an ideal birthday present or special gift. Queen Elizabeth II Brilliant Uncirculated sovereigns were first produced in 1957, and could be purchased from high street banks and gold bullion dealers. Sovereigns have been produced most years through the Queen’s reign, with the exception of a few years.
The first gold sovereign issued depicting Queen Elizabeth II was the 1953 Proof. This was a special strike, and is an incredibly rare sovereign.
Since 2000, a Brilliant Uncirculated gold sovereign has been issued by the Royal Mint each year, alongside a proof example. The sovereign would have been issued by the Royal Mint in either a blister pack, or a bullion tube.
Most sovereigns issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II depict Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon on the reverse of the coin.
