The 2017 gold proof piedfort sovereign was one of a number of gold coins issued by the Royal Mint to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the sovereign (1817 to 2017).
This is the first time a piedfort sovereign has been issued by the Royal Mint. The term ‘Piedfort’ meaning ‘Double thickness’.
Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon can be seen on the reverse of the coin, the exact same design used on the 1817 sovereign. Queen Elizabeth II’s fifth portrait can be seen on the obverse, designed by Jody Clark.
the 2017 gold proof piedfort sovereign comes in its original Royal Mint presentation case, outer card sleeve and a certificate of authenticity.
Only 3,500 2017 gold proof piedfort sovereign were issued by the Royal Mint.
Along with a piedfort sovereign, the Royal Mint also produced the proof sovereign, plain edge strike of the day sovereign and mint mark sovereign.
