The Britannia series was first introduced in 1987 by the Royal Mint, with the creation of a number of individual gold coins and sets. The Britannia was the first British gold coin to contain 1 ounce of fine gold, it’s initial purpose to rival other 1 ounce gold bullion coins, such as the Krugerrand, Panda and Eagle.

Alongside bullion issues, the Royal Mint produced collector quality proof examples. A gold proof Britannia set has been issued every year since 1987 by the Royal Mint. The depiction of Britannia has changed through the years.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Britannia series, the Royal Mint issued a special 2007 platinum proof Britannia set. This was the first year a platinum proof Britannia set was issued, followed by the 2008 platinum proof Britannia set.
