The obverse shows the portrait of the eponymous Paulus (“Paul”) Kruger (1825-1904) who was President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. Kruger was one of the key people in 19th century South Africa.

The reverse shows the springbok, a medium sized antelope indigenous in South Africa and is a common symbol of the country.

The 1969 1oz krugerrand was the third year of issue in the krugerrand series.

Only 20,000 coins were produced by the South African Mint in 1969.

The krugerrand is one of the worlds most recognised gold bullion coins. A krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, but is made of 22 carat gold, with a weight of 34.05 grams.
