King George V ascended to the throne in 1910 on the death of his father, King Edward VII. He was crowned king in 1911, and reigned until his death in 1936. Gold Sovereigns were minted in all corners of the British Empire during his reign, including London, Ottawa, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Pretoria and Bombay. Each coin has it’s own history behind it, the gold used to make it, where it was struck, and how it came to be here today. A gold sovereign has a face value of £1, and is still a legal tender coin today (Although you wouldn’t want to spend it for a £1 anymore!). The 1918 Indian sovereign would be an ideal birthday present or special gift.
