Gothic Crown - Portrait
The Gothic Crown design is the third issue in the Royal Mint Great Engravers series. The masterpiece was the work of Royal Mint shield engraver William Wyon. Wyon was also behind the Una and the Lion, as well as the Three Graces design, which featured on the first and second issue in the series.
The Gothic Crown issue has been split into two parts by the Mint, the first release features the Quartered Arms, the second Queen Victoria’s ‘Gothic’ Portrait.
The Portrait design is incredibly popular amongst coin collectors, and viewed more as a piece of art.
The Royal Mint issued the Gothic Crown – Portrait on the 7th February 2022. Although the coin was issued in 2022, it bares the date 2021. This is due to the fact that the first release (The Quartered Arms) is dated 2021.
The Royal Mint issued a number of different size coins and denominations featuring the Portrait design, including a gold proof 10kg, 5kg, 2kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, and a silver proof 2kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz and 2oz.
