Gold Two Pounds

The first gold two pounds piece (£2) was issued during the reign of King George III in 1820. It was not issued as a circulation piece, but for the collectors market only.  The first circulation gold two pounds piece was issued in 1823 (King George IV), with a gold proof two pounds piece minted in 1831 as part of the 1831 proof coin set. Further circulation and proof issues were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1887 and 1893.

All gold two pounds pieces are made of 22 carat gold, and weigh 15.98 grams. They have a diameter of 28.40mm. The gold two pounds coin is sometimes referred to as a ‘Double Sovereign’, as it is exactly double the weight of a gold sovereign. Since 1986, with the issue of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold two pounds piece, two types have been frequently produced: the commemorative gold two pounds and the St George design. The St George and the dragon gold two pounds is often included in the sovereign series sets.
