King George III Sovereigns
King George III ascended the throne in 1760, and ruled up to his death in 1820.
The first modern gold sovereign was issued during his reign in 1817. The Royal Mint employed Benedetto Pistrucci to create a reverse design – St George slaying the dragon.
Gold sovereigns were minted in 1817, 1818, 1819 and 1820 during the reign of King George III. His Laureate head can be seen on the obverse of each coin, many compare the portrait design to the style of a Roman Emperor.
