Gold Fifty Pence

The first gold fifty pence piece was issued by the Royal Mint in 1992 to commemorate the United Kingdom’s Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and the completion of the European Single Market which came into effect from the 1st January 1993.

The older style 50p piece was much larger compared to today’s circulating 50p coins. The 1992-93 gold proof fifty pence piece (EEC) and the 1994 gold proof fifty pence piece (50th anniversary of the D Day Landings) weigh 26.32 grams. The smaller 50 pieces were issued in gold from 1998, the first commemorating the 25th anniversary of the United Kingdom’s accession to the EEC. Since 1998, the gold proof fifty pence piece has a weight of 15.5 grams.

All gold proof fifty pence pieces issued commemorate a special event. They are released by the Royal Mint with presentation boxes and certificates of authenticity.
