What is a Krugerrand?

The gold krugerrand is a South African gold bullion coin. The first krugerrand was issued in 1967, and has been produced every year since. The coin is made of 22 carat gold (0.916 fine gold), and weighs 33.93 grams. The krugerrand has a diameter of 32.77mm, with a depth of 2.84mm, and contains exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold. It is widely used as a gold bullion coin, and popular amongst gold investors world wide.

How much is my Gold Krugerrand worth?

The price of gold krugerrands depends solely on the gold price. Although you get proof examples as well as bullion, most krugerrands were minted mainly for the bullion market.

Since 1980, the South African Mint has also issued fractional krugerrands. When people refer to a krugerrand, it is assumed it is a 1 ounce example, however, there is also a 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10th ounce krugerrands.

Beware of Fakes

In recent years, fraudsters have perfected faking krugerrands. With the large rise in gold prices, the production of fakes has become a lucrative business. We have come across examples that are more or less identical in design and detail to genuine krugerrands. Fake krugerrands are often made with a tungsten core (Tungsten is a metal with a similar density to gold), and a heavy gold plate, producing the same dimensions and weight as a genuine solid gold coin.

There is a simple test that you can do to determine if the krugerrand is a genuine solid gold example – The Ring Test.

  1. Balance the coin on the tip of your finger
  2. Hit the coin gently with another metal object, preferably another gold coin
  3. If the sound created is a high pitch, the coin is genuine. If the sound is a low pitch and thud like, it is likely to be a fake
